On Friday, the 23rd of May 2014, Big Red, The Goose, and myself, will set off on our second trip together. This will be the first official travelogue using Blogger, and the first time we are heading north. Zandkraal Private Nature Reserve is our destination, located a few miles outside of the town of Clanwilliam.
Clanwilliam is situated between the western slopes of the Cederberg Mountains and the east bank of the Olifants River (Elephants River). The town itself is located just off the N7 National Road, which runs from Cape Town to the Namibian border, and on the the R364 road, which extends from Lamberts Bay right through to Calvinia. It is a 230km (140 miles) trip from Cape Town. Check it out on Google Maps here - http://goo.gl/maps/60NhE, and for some indepth historical information, go here - http://www.sahistory.org.za/places/clanwilliam.
I am very keen to stay off the main drags, and rather fiind a more exciting route. Instead of heading straight up the N7, I thought we could hit the N1 through to Paarl, cross over Du Toits Kloof pass, down in to Worcester, and then cut across the valley to Wolseley. From here we have 2 options - we could cross over to Ceres, up through Prince Alfred Hamlet and on to the R303 which will take us through what appears to be some amazing mountain ranges, before coming down in to Citrusdal. From here we simply hop back on to the N7 and continue north to Clanwilliam.
The other option is to continue to Tulbagh (from Wolseley), over the pass in to Gouda, then up to Saron and Porterville, afterwhich we hit Citrusdal and head north to Clanwilliam.
We could do both actually. One way up, another way down. Yip, that's exactly what we will do!
What are your thoughts, any suggestions, any recommendations? Judging by the pictures on Zandkraal's Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/Zandkraal), we are in for a magical experience...
