This evening I finally got to meet up with Hank Arriazola, a BMW specialist and adventure rider from Texas. We chatted about his trip through Africa and popped in to Kingtek Motorcycles to meet up with owner, Andrew King.
Hank has spent the past few months riding through various parts of Africa on his trusty 1996 BMW R1100GS. Armed with a GPS, a range of Touratech accessories, some home-made trickery, and the desire to travel Africa, Hank has taken in some fantastic experiences here and across our borders.
He hit the 500 000 mile mark (800 000 kms!) on his GS as he cruised in to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. The motor is pretty much as it was when he bought it, and he has only changed 2 x clutch plates, 1 x throttle body, and the cam chain tensioners; other than that, the motor is completely stock standard!
It's always a privilege to meet fellow motorcycle travelers, and I was honoured to be invited to join him on a little excursion to Cape Point, via Boyes' Drive, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simons Town, and then through Scarborough, Kommetjie and Noordehoek. And the weather was ideal for it!
What a treat to have a small part in someone else's experience of a lifetime...
Hank returns to the US this week, but you can read up on his African Adventure via his blog page - http://www.motohank.com/Blog_Africa/Blog_Africa.html, or check out his trip through South America - http://www.motohank.com/Blog_Argentina/Blog_Argentina.html
If you find yourself in the town of Dilley, Texas (http://goo.gl/maps/BEBne), be sure to pop in to see Hank at his workshop!
