Happy birthday Gobes!

I lost my dear friend, fellow biker, and industry colleague, Dave 'Gobo' Frost in a tragic accident on the 14th of December 2013.

Today is his birthday, and we would have most likely hit the road for an evening jaunt (even in this horrid rain) before popping by our local pub for a drink. So, in celebration of this amazing creature, his quirkiness, his chirps, his laugh, his bitching, his creative streak, and his sheer warmth of heart, we will be raising our glasses in his honour this evening at Mambos pub  in Plumstead, Cape Town.

All are welcome!

This is the eulogy I wrote for his funeral:

"Dave Gobes Frost.

where do I start with this?

A day with gobes creates enough memories for a lifetime, where does one start after 17 years of knowing the guy?

A loyal friend, a trusted colleague, a father, a lover, a lunatic, a hero.

Looking around, one thing is for sure: no matter how crazy Davey was, or how bizarre his behaviour could be, or how colourful his language could be, he was loved by everyone who crossed his path. Even those who would write him off initially, apprehensive as to how to deal with this scattered character, would inevitably fall in love with the guy. You really didn’t have a choice.

In the same manner in which he would climb trussing, walls, stages and your patience, so would this phenomenal personality just grow on you.

Davey had a remarkable ability to bring people together, and has a number of beautiful friendships with some fantastic people, most of whom are here today, and some who, unfortunately, couldn’t make it. I think he would be well chuffed to see you all here, proud of these relationships that he has so lovingly nurtured over the years.

Because that’s Gobes – a friend for life, and now in death too.

Many of us have been reminiscing this past week. Sitting around fires, tales of the hilarious adventures of dave gobo frost. All of which would end in bounds of laughter, without fail. Davey made life interesting, fun, and downright crazy and I believe this was the key to all things in his life – don’t take shit too seriously, don’t let anybody get you down, don’t give up, be yourself, be adventurous, climb mountains, and in the words of one of our favourite local bands, Lithium – “Be strange, be strong, be brave, kill monsters, be strange.”.

How flipping appropriate.

Sending Davey off with a “Rest in Peace” just doesn’t seem right. Gobes would never rest, he would always be all over the place, so give them hell Davey, climb those mountains, kill those monsters, get in a couple laps on your heavenly repsol, get your knee down and keep your chin up.

We love you brother."

Ride in Peace Davey!
