Our friend Uwe Schmidt is back at it, and after months of planning, preparing and stressing is once again heading off in to Africa, departing on Saturday, the 16th of May 2015, this time on his stunning new 2014 BMW R1200GS LC stead.
Uwe had previously attempted this journey, only for it to be cut short due to an accident in Zambia, which left him with some minor injuries and serious front-end damage to his 1200GSA.
This time Uwe will be heading west in to Namibia, through Windhoek and up to Buitepos, cutting through in to Botswana and up to Livingstone in Zambia, where he had the accident. Uwe had suffered a concussion in the accident, and when he came to he found that the locals had taken him to safety and had his trashed bike loaded up in to a van, ready to be transported back in to SA. He intends to meet with these locals again and pass on his gratitude for their generous help and assistance.
From Zambia he will head up to Tanzania, Kenya and in to Ethiopia. He has been delayed in his departure, and has therefore lost 1 month of his 3 month visa for Ethiopia. This means that he has a mere month to get to his destination in order to have the final month there to explore the country. It could be a bit of a rush...
Exiting Ethiopia, Uwe will travel south through Uganda and Burundi, back in to Zambia and again through Namibia before crossing back in to South Africa.
This is going to be quite a trek and I know I will be following him closely. You too can keep tabs on his movements by following his posts on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pages/Uwe-Schmidt/1801445736748191. Go 'like' his page and show some support!
As for our own trip, we have sketched out some ideas for where we wish to go and the necessary routing, so watch this space as we go through the motions...
